Step 4: Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves

Hey everyone, Vance Johnson here. Now that we’ve covered the third step, I want to talk about the fourth step in the 12-step program: “Make a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.” Let’s talk about what this fearless moral inventory of ourselves means and how to successfully take on this step.

Creating a fearless moral inventory of ourselves is not easy. But it’s worth it. Remember, “fearless” does not mean “comfortable.” It means feeling that fear and discomfort and pain and creating your inventory despite those feelings. It means remembering all of the ways you have wronged people in your life by taking an honest look at events.

Remember, in step two, we came to understand that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity, and in step three we turned our lives and will over to that Higher Power. Now, in step four of recovery, it’s time to do some work and hold ourselves accountable.

I know that I did horrible things when I was enslaved to my addiction.I failed partners, my children, my parents; I must have let down nearly every person in my life. And step four was where I had to be accountable for the damage I’d done. I had to feel the guilt and remorse of my actions and take a toll of the destruction I had let my addiction cause.

Let me be clear; none of this was easy. I’d spent years denying the extent of my failures, and acknowledging all of them gave me pain that I’d spent years blocking out. But I was finally free to stop pretending and ignoring my shortcomings. And while that hurt, I knew that it was the only way that I could move on and have a chance at fixing some of my mistakes.
