XTC is an illegal drug that you often find in “rave” or club scenes. Unfortunately, more and more young adults in the United States are abusing the XTC drug and suffering dangerous side effects.

This article will tell you everything you need to know about the side effects of XTC drug use, and how to get help for your struggle with an addiction to XTC and other drugs.

XTC Drug Facts

You might have heard the XTC drug referred to as MDMA, ecstasy, or molly. This is because XTC is one of the many street names for ecstasy. Though the XTC drug was first produced as a pharmacological drug in 1912, it has turned into an illegal drug that many teens and young adults use at parties and festivals.

Partiers might take XTC in capsule or pill form. XTC drug use causes immediate mood changes and often trigger vivid hallucinations and sensory stimulation. These feelings can make it difficult to make good decisions, meaning that MDMA, ecstasy, or molly users experience an increased likelihood to partake in dangerous behaviors.

Many young adults in the United States take other drugs alongside XTC, which can cause even more dangerous side effects. This includes engaging in risky behaviors such as having unprotected sex, which in turn leads to a higher chance of contracting sexually transmitted infections.

In fact, because the XTC drug is so popular in party scenes for teens and young adults, some distributors sell fake tablets for profit. For example, bath salts, cocaine, cough medicine, and others are all sold as ecstasy. This makes it difficult to impossible for XTC users to know exactly what they’re taking.

Research from the United Kingdom even shows that some XTC drug tablets don’t have any traces of ecstasy in them and instead have a deadly mix of other illegal drugs that are simply sold as ecstasy.

Now that you know a little bit more about the history of XTC and the immediate physical and psychological changes this illegal drug causes in users, it’s time to look at just how dangerous the side effects of the drug can be.

Side Effects of XTC Drug Use

There is a wide range of side effects that stem from the use of XTC. The National Institute on Drug Abuse explains that the effects of XTC drug use “last about 3 to 6 hours” or even longer when users take more than one dose. After continuous use, users experience two types of symptoms: long-term and short-term side effects. Here’s what they both look like.

Short-Term Side Effects Include:

  • Mood changes
  • Increase in mental health issues like anxiety and depression
  • Involuntary teeth clenching
  • Nausea
  • Blurred vision
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Heightened sex drive
  • Decrease in libido
  • Poor decision making

Long-Term Side Effects of the Drug:

  • Brain damage
  • Memory loss
  • Worsened mental health
  • Addiction
  • Cardiovascular issues
  • Organ failure
  • Rapid rise in body temperature
  • Death

It’s the long-term effects of XTC drug use that end up being the most impactful and dangerous. The rapid rise in body temperature mentioned above can lead to kidney failure, decreased liver function, and heart failure, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

High doses of MDMA, ecstasy, or molly often lead to persistent mental health concerns, too. Depression, severe anxiety, paranoia, and suicidal ideation or attempts are all mental health issues that worsen with XTC drug use. These can be just as disruptive or deadly as the physical side effects.

This is one of the many reasons why seeking help for all the effects of addiction and XTC drug use might be exactly what you need to get your life back on track.
