What Is My Why: Lindsey A., Receptionist

Veterans Recovery Assistant

My name is Lindsay and I am a receptionist as well as a grateful recovering addict. My battle with addiction started when I was 16, and I quickly found myself spiraling in a constant search for more drugs. Sadly, getting my next high was my life’s purpose for seven years. I spent most of that time in and out of rehabs, sober houses, detox, PHP programs, outpatient programs, and jails.

And while I learned so many great recovery strategies over this period, nothing ever stuck. And for a long time, I accepted that it was only a matter of time until my addiction destroyed me, but I simply could not stop using.

But that changed when I realized that I was pregnant with my son. My priorities shifted, and suddenly all those lessons that I learned in treatment suddenly made sense. So in June of 2017, I finally got sober and I’ve stayed that way, all thanks to my son and the help that I got over the years. Today, I am a recovering addict, a single mother, a good friend, and, proudly, a receptionist for Heroes’ Mile who gets to help people in need.

I feel blessed to work for a company where my experience is an asset. Every day, I get to give back some of the kindness and compassion that I received, and I couldn’t be more grateful for this opportunity. I take my work seriously; our patients deserve absolutely nothing less. My work here lets me follow my passion of helping people in recovery, and I treat every day as a new chance to make a difference for our patients.
